This old-style hotel is located at the foot of
Mount Meru in Arusha Park. The history of
Momella goes back to 1907 when a German
married couple, Trappe, bought land here and
developed a small estate. In 1957 Margarete
Trappe died; in 1960 Hardy Krueger came to Momella to
produce the film "Hatari" which starred John
Wayne. Soon after the lodge was built and it
was opened to "discerning tourists".
Momella is set in beautiful gardens and
comprises a cluster of two person bandas
surrounding the main building which houses a
restaurant and bar. Each banda (hut) is
twin-bedded, has electric lighting and hot
showers. There is a swimming pool in the
gardens. Wild animals including elephant and
buffalo are frequently seen roaming just a short
distance away from the lodge grounds.
Momella is the ideal base for climbing Mount
Meru and a pleasant place to relax after the
climb.
