Sweetwaters Tented Camp lies in the heart of privately owned 24,000 acre Sweetwaters Game Reserve, enjoying magnificent views across the game - studded plains to the snowcapped peaks of Mount Kenya. Be sure to take a night game drive (where the photo of the lioness on this page was shot).
Accommodation is provided in luxuriously appointed tents, set under thatch, with en-suite facilities and private verandah. Each tent overlooks the waterhole. Within the quaint, original farmhouse is the dining room, bar and reception with its superb accommodation, personal service, first class cuisine and outstanding array of activities. Options include night game drives by four-wheel-drive vehicles, walking safaris escorted by a knowledgeable ranger, bird walks, camel safaris and outdoor dining ensure there is always plenty to do.
During your stay, visit the chimpanzee
rehabilitation center which was initiated by the Jane Goodall
Institute, Kenya Wildlife Services and Lonrho East Africa
Ltd. Although chimpanzees are not indigenous to Kenya, a
colony has been set up, where orphaned, abused and
abandoned chimpanzees can be introduced, rehabilitated and
taught to fend for themselves in an area that resembles their
natural living conditions. This colony was started in 1994
with three chimpanzees and grew to 15 within the first year.
You will board a small boat for a short journey along the Uaso
Nyiro river to observe chimpanzees living along the river
banks in large open spaces. A lecture will be given at the
camp on this project.
